Professional Communications
Over the course of her decade as publisher-editor, Ruth Gorman solicited a wide variety of pieces to fill the pages of My Golden West: articles, short stories, advertisements, and humorous illustrations. Though the magazine predominantly published works by western Canadian writers and artists, articles that pertained to western Canada in some way (such as notable figures visiting Alberta) were also accepted. Despite the magazine’s scope and the financial constraints of self-publishing, Gorman cultivated a wide readership that extended far beyond western Canada — a draft article from 1970 indicates that issues of My Golden West made their way to “many Canadian libraries and a few American ones […] and at present subscribers in 22 different foreign countries pay $2.75 a year to read about exciting Alberta.”
This collection of records features correspondences between Gorman and various writers, distributors, contributors, and interview subjects.
