Vercammen wrote a letter to the editor in 1999 congratulating the RCMP on their investigation into an incident in Hythe. The letter included the line: "the only letters we will likely read for the next month will be from lawyers and police-haters complaining that the tricks and fibs shouldn't be used to catch criminals. Where have we heard this story before?" Vercammen was sued in 2006 for allegedly firing at a man during the course of an arrest.
