1991 National Conference
Background
In November 1991, the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women (CRIAW) held its 15th annual national conference in Edmonton, Alberta. The event was jointly hosted by the Women's Research Centre (WRC) and the Women's Program and Resource Centre (WPRC) at the University of Alberta.
The conference's theme was "Global Vision, Local Action," and its focus was to link local events with broader global themes. Some of the questions that the call for submissions encouraged presenters to consider included "How does my work relate to the work of women elsewhere in Canada or globally?"; "How does my work reflect the context in which I am doing it?"; and "How is my relationship to my work location reflected in my work?" (CRIAW Conference Call for Submissions Brochure, 1991; see left).
The conference was attended by over 350 women from across Canada, and included keynote speakers, workshops, paper presentations, and panels.
Collection Rationale
This collection includes all documents in the repository generated in the course of planning and holding the 1991 CRIAW conference. These documents were written by members of the organizing committee, which was comprised of members from both organizations and chaired by Marilyn Assheton-Smith. For example, see the letter to the right, written by Dr. Barbara Spronk of Athabasca University, inviting publishers to set up display tables at the conference. Many of the documents were created by Marcelline Forestier, the woman who did much of the day-to-day planning work as the conference coordinator.
The documents in this collection capture the various facets of the conference planning process, from soliciting conference presenters to obtaining funding to arranging food, lodging, and entertainment. Considering the large proportion of documents in the repository that deal with the 1991 CRIAW conference, this event was a major event in the history of the Women's Research Centre.
