Welcome to the Campus Food Bank Archive

This archive is a repository for artifacts from the 30-year evolution of the Campus Food Bank.

When the Campus Food Bank opened in 1991, UASU VP External Randy Boissonnault was quoted in The Gateway saying, “It's truly disheartening but strikingly real that we are forced with the prospect of setting up a food bank on campus.” This sentiment remains all too true more than three decades later. The CFB is the oldest food bank on a university campus in Canada and the only student food bank that operates as a separate charitable organization from the institution it serves. As we enter our fourth decade of work addressing food insecurity among University of Alberta students, it is important to reflect on and remember all of the vibrant and critical work that CFB volunteers and staff have accomplished throughout our history.

We served our first student clients in 1991 when the Graduate Students’ Association began department-level food collection and distribution as a response to high tuition and fees for international students. The financial burden facing students has become worse in the intervening years, and we have responded by expanding programming to include food education and other services like a grocery bus to cheaper and more varied grocery stores farther from campus. This work has only been possible because of the dedication and energy of our volunteers, who are the heart of this organization.

The archive is open for submissions from past CFB volunteers and clients. If you would like to add scans of memorabilia, please email us at  info@campusfoodbank.com or use our submissions form.
