In Arms Queer Theatre
Funded 2015 In Arms is the first queer mandated theatre company in Edmonton. With the intention of expanding beyond the confines of the University, In Arms hopes to serve the broader Edmonton community by nurturing the Edmonton Theatre community with yearly original devised plays as well as professional productions. Further, Drama Based Queer Education programs that work with a variety of groups will enrich our city’s culture of queer theory. The fight against homophobia, transphobia, sexism, and patriarchal power imbalances is rooted in a strong and confident educated stance. Through the use of the arts, In Arms will be another voice telling all its current and prospective citizens that they are welcome in our city. -
Indigenous Medical and Dental Students’ Association (IMDSA)
Funded 2019-2021 The Indigenous Medical and Dental Students’ Association (IMDSA) is a group of Indigenous students at the University of Alberta in the medical and dental programs from a variety of backgrounds who are passionate about their culture and Indigenous health. The IMDSA was founded in 2018 and is the first of its kind in Canada. All Indigenous medical and dental students accepted to the University of Alberta are automatically members of the IMDSA and hold the responsibilities associated with membership. Their mission is to represent, encourage, and advocate for future Indigenous health care providers while staying grounded in traditions and teachings. Through a positive narrative, they promote an Indigenous presence in health professions through mentorship and support with career transitions. -
Indigenous Poets’ Society
Funded 2020-2022 Their goal is to help promote healing, growth, leadership, connection, and resiliency through poetry. They come together not only to discuss social struggles, but to heal by celebrating connections with land, culture, history and identity. They provide a space where Indigenous poets can feel heard and understood by their own people and sometimes allies. They also support new poets who wish to branch out and share their words with the rest of the world. Poets of all levels, styles, and ages are welcome. -
Islamic Relief at the University of Alberta
Funded 2013-2018 A community group focused on the offering of education and support to students and community members in accordance with the faith teachings of Islam. -
Jack.org UAlberta
Funded 2018-2019 Jack.org UAlberta strives to bring the mental health conversation to everyone in and around the campus community and it is an opportunity for U of A students to join the national network of passionate youth working towards the same goal: "No More Silence" on the subject of mental health. -
Journalists for Human Rights (JHR)
Funded 2005-2009 Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) is a charitable organization committed to using the power of the media to effect positive social change. Members design and produce media-driven awareness campaigns to engage and educate students in issues of human rights and justice. By increasing the quality and quantity of human rights reporting, JHR pressures abusers to stop and empowers victims to fight back. JHR works collaboratively to coordinate domestic and international projects that build capacity for human rights reporting. -
Just Java
Funded 2002-2003 Just Java in its first year was a group of eight U of A students and the United Church Chaplain, all of whom were affiliated in some way with the United Church of Canada. These people were united in their desire to live their faith convictions in actions promoting social change. In its first year Just Java set forward the following goals: to educate ourselves about the issues related to fair trade, to educate people on campus about the issue of fair trade coffee, to encourage coffee retailers to sell fair trade, to increase the demand for fair trade coffee on campus. -
Kulture Hubs
Funded 2015-2016 Kulture Hubs is an educational extension of the Hip Hop in the Park Foundation whose mandate is to reclaim the founding values of Hip Hop as a culture of peace and reconciliation. Hip Hop is commonly perceived as embodying greed, violence, and misogyny; however, it was developed in the South Bronx in the late 1970s to enact a peace treaty between over 100 gangs and singlehandedly saved an entire community. Rather than mimicking this historical Hip Hop culture, Kulture Hubs seeks to create a new Hip Hop culture which integrates contemporary issues and experiences in marginalized communities in Edmonton. They seek to unify leadership from different activist communities so that we can work together towards the common goal of liberation. -
Kyoto Working Group
Funded 2002-2003 The Alberta In Kyoto Investigation Group was set up to analyze the potential effects of the Kyoto Protocol on the province of Alberta’s environment, people, economy and industry. -
La Chiva
Funded 2006-2007 The overriding goal of La Chiva is to foster public awareness of the current Colombian social and political situation through proactive campaigns that reflect their commitment to social change. -
Lal
Funded 2002-2003 Lal is a media collective that provides technical services to make it easier for non-profits to use the internet for promotion, communication, and collaboration. Lal plans to research the needs of non-profit groups, develop opensource software to meet those needs, and make our results publicly available to other groups. -
Land Based Research Group
Funded 2019 The Land Based Research Group is focused on amplifying Indigenous ways of knowing and being by creating art that represents experiences of Indigenous people in Edmonton on the topic of connecting with the land. They are currently working on an art exhibition for Edmonton communities. -
Legal Activist Collective (LAC)
Funded 2006-2009 This organization is a resource for student and community based research, education and social activism. They provide administrative, informational and technological resources to assist groups to transform social concern into effective action. The goal of LAC is to engage people in the discussion of our Western Justice system and offer thoughtful counter voices. -
Level7
Funded 2020-2022 Level 7 believes in crafting a legacy of sustainability advocates who seek discomfort by challenging the status quo – they believe in action-driven change. Their project integrates an alternative recycling solution at the University of Alberta through the combination of people, platforms, and passion. By repurposing collected waste, they are able to provide various on-campus groups with education and eco-friendly materials. Uniting the community through sustainability and engineering, Level 7 provides a tangible solution to help mitigate the global waste crisis, while also striving to stimulate innovation in student groups. -
LGBTQ Newcomers and Refugees
Funded 2017-2018 Creates supportive safer community for LGBTQ newcomer and refugee youth in Edmonton. -
Media Working Group
Funded 2002-2003 Media working group members are committed to providing a structured, objective, and credible media analysis. In collaboration with the U of A Coalition Against War and Racism, we completed an analysis of the local newspaper coverage of the situation in Iraq. -
Mexico Working Group
Funded 2005-2007 The raison d’étre of the Mexico Working Group was to increase links between Alberta and Mexico, and promote cultural understanding between our two peoples. Every activity undertaken by the Mexico working group adhered to the ultimate goal of creating a positive long term impact in both communities. -
Migrante Alberta Youth
Funded 2015-2020 A youth group run by Migrante that provides opportunities for education, engagement, and community building in the Philippine community of migrant workers in Edmonton and beyond. Migrante dedicates its work to grassroots migrants advocacy. Understanding and addressing the immediate needs of migrants is important to them. -
Native Studies Course Requirement (NSCR)
Funded 2016-2017 Native Studies Course Requirement exists because there is a perpetual deficit within the current Canadian educational institutions. This deficit is contingent with every aspect of the creation and maintenance of the Canadian state, one which has continually neglected but also perpetuates cultural genocide. NSCR, does not solely exist to advocate and push for required indigenous course content. -
Palestine Solidarity Network (PSN)
Funded 2009-2022 The Palestine Solidarity Network is a non-profit, grassroots collective aimed at advocating for and upholding the human rights of Palestinians in the face of ongoing oppression, occupation, racism, and discrimination, both in occupied Palestine and in the diaspora. -
Peace Ambassadors
Funded 2011-2012 The goal of Peace Ambassadors was to be a peer to peer training group for youth that educates youth about issues of racism and oppression and provide youth with the skills and tools to peacefully resolve conflict surrounding racism and other forms of oppression should they see it or witness it. Interactive workshops using popular education as the method of delivery were the most effective tool for delivering this message and educating youth. -
Peregrine Falcon Webcam
Funded 2003-2004 The Environmental Coordination Office of Students (ECOS) initiated a project to plant a webcam in the nest of a peregrine falcon couple nesting at the top of the Clinical Sciences building on the U of A campus. -
Prairie Sage Protectors (PSP)
Funded 2021-2022 Prairie Sage Protectors was established in amiskwaciwaskahikan (Edmonton AB) in 2021 by a group of Black, Indigenous and colonized people of colour, new and experienced organizers, who saw a need for a more unified and radical response across the Prairies to the ongoing/escalating oppression of the state and its agents (police & military, fascists) against Indigenous, Black, immigrant, queer, unhoused/displaced, impoverished, and otherwise marginalized people. -
Radio Accessibility Working Group (RAWG)
Funded 2005-2006 RAWG is a group of volunteers working towards making radio accessible to persons with hearing loss. TextRadio, an online service offering community radio online with captions and transcripts, is produced by RAWG.
